We've been amidst the ninth generation of video game consoles for just over a year now. The PlayStation 5 officially released on November 12th, 2020. Sony is yet to release a version of the console other than the standard, that is except for the lower-cost digital edition which doesn't feature a disc drive.

Since the console was first revealed, in all its glory, fans have pleaded for a black version — or simply a version that isn't white. Alas, Sony are yet to bring such an idea to life. Though, many took it upon themselves to sell custom faceplates so that PlayStation 5 owners could customise their console to their liking. Sony shut down these opportunists and forced them to provide refunds.

Now, Sony has filed for an official patent at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for what appear to be custom PlayStation 5 faceplates. The claim is described as "the ornamental design for a cover for electronic device," and the term "skin cover for PS5 console" is also stated.

Finally, your dreams of an official black PlayStation 5 might be becoming a reality. Sony officially distributing alternate faceplates for their console would totally change the game, serving as an infinitely cheaper alternative to special edition console which were the norm during the eighth generation (the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One).

Though, of course, Sony themselves are yet to officially announce anything in regard to faceplates. Thus, don't get your hopes up to high just yet. This might unfortunately just be a cautionary measure to prevent further unofficial sales of custom faceplates. Regardless, you can check out the official patent for yourself here.
