Jeff Bock, reputable and esteemed box office analyst hailing from Exhibitor Relations, recently participated in an interview with USA Today (via Toonado) in which he revealed that he thinks Paramount Pictures will announce their plans for a sequel to the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie any day now.
Given how much money the video game movie managed to make at the box office — surpassing the domestic gross of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu to become the highest-grossing movie based on a video game ever (in North America) — and the tantalising teaser that was the movie's final post-credits scene, it seems clear that a sequel is inevitable.
Though, Paramount Pictures are yet to announce such a thing — despite that director Jeff Fowler is raring to return to the fray and expand the cinematic universe. Bock believes that Paramount Pictures will announce a sequel as soon as the global pandemic subsides and all goes back to normal. It seems that Bock thinks Sonic the Hedgehog is but a fledgling franchise.
"No doubt 'Sonic the Hedgehog' is just getting started. A sequel is imminent for Paramount Studios, who desperately needs new franchises," Bock explains. "I’d expect an announcement as soon as the world starts spinning in a direction we all recognize again."
That's not all Bock revealed to the site but also that video game movies in general will be on the rise soon — since the likes of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog have proven that they can prosper. "Video game adaptations are definitely hot properties again in Hollywood thanks to Sonic and his box office antics."
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog is now available digitally — Blu-ray and Ultra 4K HD release set for May 19th, 2020.
