Director John Carpenter is a bona fide Hollywood legend, helming classics like Halloween, The Thing, and Christine. At this stage in his career, though, could a video game adaptation be next for him?

It may seem like an unexpected match, but the filmmaker is a big gamer and just so happens to be a fan of Dead Space. In that sci-fi horror franchise, players are tasked with uncovering the dark secrets behind the events aboard the USG Ishimura through the final logs of the ill-fated crew and your encounters with the few survivors that remain.

Along the way, you square off with all manner of horrifying alien creatures (most of which are reminiscent of what we saw in The Thing) and it's a game that most definitely isn't for the faint of heart. So, it sounds like a pretty good fit for Carpenter, don't you think?

"The only one I can think of, and I’ve mentioned it before, is Dead Space," the director told AV Club (via SFFGazette.com) when asked if he would helm a video game movie. "That would make a real great movie. I could do that. [Any] of them were really good. I even like the last one, the action one that nobody else liked."

Asked if he gets scared playing games, Carpenter said, "Well, I don’t like things jumping out at me and threatening my character, no! Don’t threaten my character, I want to survive. A lot of games, they penalize you for dying. It’s one of the things I like about Fallout, they don’t penalize you. You die over and over again on a hard mission. I like that."

There have been rumblings about a Dead Space movie over the years, but if anyone can make it happen, it's surely Carpenter. We'd imagine the filmmaker would ground a big screen adaptation a reality, forgoing pricey visual effects for practical gore and creatures. That would be quite something to see, and a great way to make this video game movie stand out from the crowd.

Would you like to see a Dead Space movie from the Halloween director?
