Free Guy is an upcoming comedy movie in which Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) stars as a background character within a violent, open-world video game — much akin to the Grand Theft Auto video game series. Directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn are responsible for the screenplay.
The cast of Free Guy also includes Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Lil Rey Howery (Get Out), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Blindspotting), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). The first official trailer and synopsis for Free Guy debuted back in December — you can check those out below.
Recently, Disney shifted around the release dates for all of their upcoming movies. The changes were presumably made due to the Coronavirus pandemic which is currently still ongoing and has caused most theatres to outright close up shop. Disney wasn't the only studio to make such changes as Sony also delayed the likes of their Uncharted movie — more on that here.
Among the movies that have been delayed is Free Guy. The video game movie will no longer arrive in theatres on July 3rd, 2020 but rather on December 11th, 2020. That's certainly a big delay but understandable and nowhere near as extreme a delay as some other movies have been subject to.
Following the announcement of the release date delay, Ryan Reynolds took to social media to both inform his followers of the change and also share a clip from the movie which he believes is timely due to the current climate. You can check that out below both attached to the actor's tweet (@VancityReynolds) as well as separately via his official YouTube channel.
