Free Guy will follow a bank teller who isn't pleased with his daily life. To top it off, he realises that he's actually a background character in a brutal open-world video game. With the servers to be shut down soon, he has to communicate with the player in order to save his world. It's got a strange premise for sure but so does
Detective Pikachu and look how that turned out.
Speaking of the furry Pokémon detective,
Free Guy will star Ryan Reynolds as the aforementioned non-playable character. The cast also includes Taika Waititi (
Thor Ragnarok), Utkarsh Ambudkar (
The Mindy Project), Joe Keery (
Stranger Things), Jodie Comer (
Killing Eve), and Lil Rel Howery (
Get Out).
Shawn Levy, who serves as the showrunner of Netflix's
Stranger Things, will direct
Free Guy. The script is in the hands of Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn. As well as Reynolds and Levy, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will produce.
Empire recently revealed our first look at the upcoming video game movie. Previously, all we had seen was a cast photo which was taken as shooting kicked off —
you can check that out here. The new still features Reynolds straddling a motorcycle. It's nothing much. However, an cool poster was also released — and you can check that out below as well as the still.
Free Guy is set to arrive in theatres on July 3rd, 2020.
