Warhorse Studios is undergoing a major leadership change. Company co-founder Daniel Vávra, who served as creative lead on Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, is stepping down from his role as creative director.

The reason? He's going to help bring the franchise to the big screen.

In an interview with Czech site CzechCrunch, studio head Martin Frývaldský confirmed that Vávra is stepping away from game development to focus on the big-screen adaptation, which includes working on a script to ensure there's a "strong story" that's faithful to the franchise.

"Dan has a new role. That’s the creation of the Kingdom Come movie," Frývaldský said (via VGC). "We have been moving the Kingdom Come brand away from video games for some time now. So far we have been in comics, concerts, and tourism, but the film has attracted us the most. That is why Dan and I are working on getting it onto the screen or the big screen. There is also a draft script."

"I'm sure people will wonder if this is some kind of breakup with Warhorse," he added. "No, on the contrary, Dan himself wanted to move on. He made three games that were a global success, he has been wanting to try something different for a long time. Getting Kingdom Come to the screen [...] in the next few years is another milestone that we want to achieve, and that is Dan's new role. You won't see him in the office every day anymore, but in a broader sense he is still part of Warhorse."

Apparently, there had been plans for a Kingdom Come: Deliverance adaptation for quite a while, but COVID kind of delayed everything.

"Now, after the release of the second game, we have returned to the idea with much greater drive," Frývaldský said. "We feel the interest from the film world, negotiations are already underway. We don't just want to sell the rights, we want the film to be what we imagine it to be."

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a historical action RPG series from game developer Warhorse Studios. The franchise is known for its realistic medieval combat and faithfulness to the early 15th-century Bohemia setting. The franchise emphasizes historically grounded quests and period-accurate weapons and social systems.

The first game in the series was released in 2018. You play as Henry, the son of a blacksmith who is thrust into a raging civil war. After watching helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family, you set off to avenge the death of your parents and repel the invading forces. A sequel was released in 2025, continuing the adventures of Henry.

Both games are considered a commercial success. The first has sold over 10 million copies worldwide as of 2025, while the sequel has sold more than five million copies within its first year of release. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II received strong critical acclaim, with a Metascore around 89/100.
