The wait is nearly over, Mortal Kombat II, the follow-up to the hard-hitting 2021 reboot, has officially completed filming and is gearing up for its theatrical debut on October 24, 2025. Packed with more brutal, bone-shattering action, the sequel promises to raise the stakes for fans of the iconic franchise.
However, filming on the sequel wrapped in January 2024, and with a release just four months away, there's been virtually no promotional materials released for the pic such as posters, teasers, trailers or stills.
Comicbook recently caught up with the sequel's writer, Jeremy Slater, who acknowledged that Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema are strategically looking at 2025 film slate to select the best time to release Mortal Kombat II.
“I’m so excited for people to see the movie,” Slater told the site. “It’s been done for a while. We’ve been waiting for the right release date and waiting for the right window. I have been to those test screenings, which are full of Mortal Kombat fans, and watching them react to it the way I reacted to Avengers: Endgame. They were cheering and jumping out of their seats. Every joke is landing and they are loving it. It’s one of the greatest moments of my life. That’s why you get into this business.”
If Mortal Kombat II holds on to its current release date, it will face box office competition from Tron: Ares (October 10), Black Phone 2 (October 17), Predator: Badlands (November 7), and The Running Man (November 7).
While there are some notable pics that will be released during Mortal Kombat II's theatrical run, there are no heavyweights like a superhero film or Christopher Nolan epic that will be sure to canabolize domestic box office returns.
In the first film, Earthrealm’s defenders, led by Cole Young (Lewis Tan), managed to withstand Shang Tsung’s pre-tournament assault. But the warm-up is over. The true battle begins now.
Mortal Kombat 2 is set to plunge straight into the legendary tournament itself, with Earth’s survival on the line. If the champions of Earthrealm lose for the tenth time, Shao Kahn, the ruthless Emperor of Outworld, will claim ultimate victory and enslave humanity. The stakes have never been higher.
The sequel’s expanding roster will see several legendary characters from the games brought to life on the big screen including Karl Urban (The Boys) as he takes on the highly anticipated role of Johnny Cage, the cocky martial arts movie star turned Earthrealm warrior.
Additionally, Martyn Ford will also debut as the fearsome Shao Kahn, Tati Gabrielle as the deadly assassin Jade, and Adeline Rudolph as fan-favorite princess Kitana.
Rounding out the cast, Ana Thu Nguyen will appear as the powerful Queen Sindel, Damon Herriman steps in as the dark sorcerer Quan Chi, and Desmond Chiam portrays King Jerrod, adding even more depth to the franchise’s mythos.
Returning cast members include Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax Briggs, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion.
