SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 Footage Description Reveals A Fan-Pleasing Change To Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik

The first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 debuted during Paramount Pictures' CinemaCon presentation yesterday evening, and it revealed a fan-pleasing change to Jim Carrey's villainous Dr. Robotnik...

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 races into theaters later this year and Paramount Pictures shared a first look at the movie with those attending CinemaCon in Las Vegas last night.

The footage kicked off by reuniting us with Jim Carrey's villainous Dr. Robotnik, and the now much...heftier...villain saying he had the "ultimate power in the palm of my hands and now I sit here binging on carbohydrates."

His appearance has been compared to that of Avengers: Endgame's Bro Thor, and while the transformation could be temporary, we're hoping this leads to a game-accurate take on Eggman taking centre stage in this threequel.

Agent Stone is still helping Robotnik out and it's the discovery of Shadow which spurs Robotnik back into action.

Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles later do battle with Shadow in an action-packed sequence, but he never speaks, and we still don't know who will voice him in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The trailer even seemed to suggest that Robotnik and Sonic will eventually need to team up to take Shadow down!

Knuckles, meanwhile, states that Shadow is a far more impressive hedgehog than Sonic (much to the speedster's chagrin). Unfortunately, there's currently no word on when this footage will be released online.

"We got really excited about the idea of expanding our characters in our world into television, specifically, because it gives us a platform to really do character studies," executive producer Toby Asche recently explained. "We knew that, with Shadow coming into Sonic 3 and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events."

"They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters," Asche added. "And so what television did for us is it gave us time to go into some of the more supporting characters in depth and really build them out in cool ways."

Jeff Fowler will be back in the director's chair for the threequel, with Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog), Colleen O'Shaughnessey (Miles "Tails" Prower), Idris Elba (Knuckles the Echidna), James Marsden (Tom Wachowski), Tika Sumpter (Maddie Wachowski), and Jim Carrey (Dr. Robotnik) all set to reprise their respective roles from the first two movies.

New additions to the franchise will include Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Alyla Browne (Furiosa), James Wolk (Harley Quinn), Sofia Pernas (Jane the Virgin), Cristo Fernández (Ted Lasso), and Jorma Taccone (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse).

Knuckles is set to premiere on Paramount+ on April 26, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will race into theaters on December 20.
