Sonic the Hedgehog has been in theaters now for about half a week. The live-action movie is based on the popular and iconic video game series and character of the same name. Speaking of the blue speedster; Ben Schwartz voices the titular character, Jim Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden plays Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter plays Maddie Wachowski, and Jeff Fowler directs.
Prior to the video game movie's release, Paramount Pictures released a plethora of TV spots and the like in promotion of the impending release. One of these commercials featured what appeared to be an anthropomorphic echidna. For the unenlightened; that's the species that, fan-favourite
Sonic the Hedgehog character, Knuckles is.
This sent speculation through the roof as fans couldn't quite make out whether the echidna in question was Knuckles himself or just a member of the same species. Well, (
SPOILERS AHEAD!) it turns out that it wasn't Knuckles. In fact, the movie's opening includes a whole tribe of echidnas. They're actually responsible for Sonic ending up on Earth.
Given that he subsequently spends a decade on our world, it's pretty safe to say that the none of the echidnas in the opening were Knuckles himself — since you'd figure that he would be about the same age as Sonic (as he is in the video games). However, the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie did feature a different fan-favourite character —
find out more on that here.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
