Back in April, Paramount Pictures released the very first trailer for their upcoming, live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie — starring James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and Ben Schwartz. After much backlash, the director announced that they would delay the film in order to rework the titular character's design — which was by far and away the most criticised aspect.
Parmount Pictures recently debuted a new trailer for
Sonic the Hedgehog which reveals the new look of our favourite blue speedster. Fans are infinitely more pleased this time around and thankful that Paramount were willing to take on-board the criticism. Many seem to be under the impression that the redesign cost the studio upwards of $35 million to get done — likely due to misinformation.
However, a new report by
IndieWire claims that it only cost Paramount Pictures $5 million to rework
Sonic the Hedgehog — that's including both the character design, animation, visual effects, and the like. In fact, the report suggests that it may have been even less than $5 million. It makes sense why Paramount would be so willing to concede to the criticism in that case.
The report also reveals that the only Sonic the Hedgehog visual effects that were completed at the time of the delay were the ones that featured in the first trailer —
as was suggested by these professional VFX artists.
"The only Sonic VFX that were fully completed were reportedly the ones seen in the first trailer, which dropped online April 30. Most of the VFX were not finished, so redesigning Sonic proved not to be as outrageously expensive as it would have been had all of the film’s VFX been done."
Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theatres on February 14th, 2020.
