Sonic the Hedgehog arrived in theatres on February 14th and remains in them to this day. The live-action movie is based on the popular video game series of the same name and stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular speedster alongside Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski. Jeff Fowler served as director.
Following the video game movie's arrival in theatres,
director Jeff Fowler took to Twitter to tease that the future is bright for the blue blur — clearly implying that the movie's success seems to have been enough to warrant a sequel or two. Well, if that wasn't confirmation enough that such things have and are being considered; James Marsden recently revealed that he's signed on for sequels.
According to the actor, he's contractually obliged to return for as many future instalments as Paramount Pictures wants.
“I believe, I don’t know if I’m supposed to say. As many as they want to make," Marsden told
Variety. Based on that alone, it seems Paramount always intended to make a franchise out of
Sonic the Hedgehog — including multiple instalments. Marsden continued:
"Yeah, that’s my somewhat vague answer. It is such a good group of people and it was so much fun to see Jim [Carrey] enjoying himself again. I think this was his second-biggest opening weekend of all of his movies. I was kind of amazed at that statistic. He just had a big smile on his face and he was hugging everyone. It just felt like it was such a cool thing.”
In other news; Paramount Pictures recently announced that
Sonic the Hedgehog's theatrical release has been indefinitely postponed in Japan on account of the Coronavirus outbreak —
