Despite rumblings that a new trailer would be released today, the Nintendo Direct presentation celebrating The Legend of Zelda's 40th anniversary didn't reveal any footage from the movie. We do, however, have the official title treatment for the upcoming Sony Pictures release.
It has, however, been confirmed that the title is simply The Legend of Zelda. Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that there's a reason the movie doesn't have a subtitle. As for why, the Japanese video game designer said we'll have to watch the movie to find out.
In terms of story details, Miyamoto said The Legend of Zelda is based on stories and concepts from the wider franchise, meaning it isn't necessarily going to adapt any one game, in particular.
"The title is The Legend of Zelda," Miyamoto announces in the video below. "Once you see the film, you’ll understand why there isn’t a subtitle."
"This is an original film based on the many stories, ideas, and concepts of the series, built up through the games for 40 years. Through the creative power and visual expertise of the talented production team, It’s become an artistic work worthy of The Legend of Zelda series."
He continued, "Both the development team from Nintendo and I are also involved, of course. When we talk about The Legend of Zelda, there’s the Triforce. What role do you think it will play in the film? We’ll share more details at a later time, so please look forward to it."
The Legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power.
To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artefacts that can aid him in his quest.
The Legend of Zelda cast is led by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. Joining them are Uli Latukefu as Ganondorf, Dichen Lachman as Impa, the bodyguard and advisor to Princess Zelda, Yvonne Strahovski, Samara Weaving, and the late Sam Neill in mystery roles.
The Legend of Zelda is directed by Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes filmmaker Wes Ball and is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 30, 2027.
