The Despicable Me and Minions franchises are great, but is Illumination the right studio to tackle The Super Mario Bros. Movie? That's a question many fans have asked, but since the news broke, we've seen that - visually, at least - they're definitely not veering too far from the games.
While the A-List voice cast continues to be an issue for some, we think Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt deserves a chance to prove he has what it takes to play Mario. It feels like the actor is being judged too soon, and we'd argue that he's still a much better choice to play the character than Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, for example!
Only time will tell how this one pans out, but another new poster has just been released (via Toonado.com). This time, the focus is on Anya Taylor-Joy's Princess Peach as she heads down the Rainbow Road in what looks set to be some classic Mario Kart action. It's hard not to smile looking at what should be a standout sequence in the movie.
With the Super Bowl taking place this Sunday, we also can't help but wonder whether these posters could be building to a new TV spot or trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Needless to say, we'll keep you updated on that front.
From Nintendo and Illumination comes a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film also stars Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to be released in theaters on April 7, 2023.
