Sonic the Hedgehog will be racing into theatres on February 14th in his very own live-action feature film. Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey star as the titular speedster and Dr. Robotnik respectively while James Marsden and Tika Sumpter play Tom and Maddie Wachowski — Jeff Fowler directs.
With the movie now less than a month away, Paramount Pictures has begun releasing TV spots and naturally these have surfaced online and sent the
Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase into a frenzy — particularly the one below. This new spot comes courtesy of
Tails' Channel and features some action-packed shots of the Sonic the Hedgehog outrunning Dr. Robotnik's menacing drones and missiles.
However, what's more interesting than the footage itself is that; the words
"Super Sonic" blare on-screen at one point. That term should set off alarm bells for fans of the franchise as Super Sonic is the title that the titular speedster goes by when he's fully charged up by the Chaos Emeralds — and imbued with fantastical abilites such as flight and time travel.
While it would certainly be exciting to see Sonic imbued with the power of the Chaos Emeralds on the big screen, there's a chance that the marketing team behind the TV spot simply aren't familiar with Super Sonic. However, we can still hold out hope — right?
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
