Jumanji: The Next Level arrived in theatres just days ago. The comedy movie stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Awkwafina, and Nick Jonas. These actors play video game avatars that are inhabited by players who have been unwillingly sucked into the virtual world.
This is in-keeping with
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle which released back in 2017 and to which
Jumanji: The Next Level is a sequel. The first instalment in the recent Jumanji reboot movies was a shocking success and almost earned $1 billion at the box office. Sony Pictures are looking to recapture that lightning in a bottle with the sequel.
During its first day in theatres,
Jumanji: The Next Level earned an impressive $19.4 million —
more on that here. At that time, it was speculated that the sequel was in for a $50 million opening weekend. However,
Jumanji: The Next Level has quite exceeded that expectation and actually earned $60.1 million (via
Box Office Mojo).
That's almost double the $35 million that
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle earned during its opening weekend. As such, the sequel retains its top spot on box office charts. However, with
Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker looming ever closer, Jumanji: The Next Level will likely have to hand over the crown soon.
In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.
Jumanji: The Next Level is now showing in theatres!
