Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie has arrived in theaters today. An adaptation of Nintendo's popular Mario franchise, the film figures to be a massive hit with box office analysts estimating a $225 million-plus opening weekend. For those not planning to see the CG-animated film in theaters, how long will you have to wait to watch it from home?
Universal Pictures has not yet announced when The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be coming to streaming services, but we do have a general idea of when to expect it based on previous films. As a Universal movie, we already know that when it does come to streaming, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will find its home on Peacock. The only question now is when?
Again, no official date has been mentioned, but the deal between Universal and April guarantees that new movies are released on streaming no later than four months after their theatrical debut. At the latest, that means The Super Mario Bros. Movie will come to Peacock on August 5th.
However, it's possible that it could be sooner than that. Both Knock at the Cabin and M3GAN came to Peacock just 49 days after their theatrical debuts. That would put The Super Mario Bros. Movie on Peacock as early as May 24th.
It will most likely depend on the movie's box office performance. The film currently sits at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it "a colorful -- albeit thinly plotted -- animated adventure that has about as many Nintendos as Nintendont's." But it does have an impressive 95% audience score right now, which could indicate it will be much more popular with fans and families. It could also mean that The Super Mario Bros. Movie will have legs in which case it could wind up staying a bit longer in theaters.
In the meantime, the only way to watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie right now is in theaters, so be sure to check your local listings.
