Grand Theft Auto 6 is changing one of the oldest habits for players in the series. Italian creator MikeShowSha spent about two hours at Rockstar North playing the game and said sprint is no longer a tap on X. You click the left stick. Lucia or Jason start running and stay in that run until you stop moving or click the stick again.
Rockstar brought a small group of creators into the Edinburgh studio around the Extended Look, including TGG, Rubius, Davy Jones, and MikeShowSha. Rob Nelson ran the session and took requests about what to look at. The sprint mapping news came out of that visit, not out of the August leak dumps Take-Two is still supposedly chasing.
The rest of the control note from those previews is just as specific. L3 handles sprint. A/X is moving to the emergency brake because you can freefire from a car the way Red Dead Redemption 2 let you shoot off a horse. That is a different layout from Grand Theft Auto 5 and from Red Dead, where tap-to-sprint has been the default feel for years.
GTA 5 launched with mash-to-run on foot. First-person on PS4 let some players click the stick. Everybody else kept tapping X until the Mercenaries update in June 2023 added a hold-to-sprint toggle in Settings. Red Dead 2 never made that switch. A lot of people still associate Rockstar movement with tapping a face button until the character finally commits to a sprint.
Some replies to MikeShowSha's content wanted a classic layout so GTA 5 and Red Dead muscle memory still work on day one. Rockstar has not posted a controls layout sheet, so that option to remap it is still unconfirmed. However usually you can remap controls in games to each users personal preferance.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is still dated for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The build MikeShowSha watched was running on a base PS5 at a steady 30. He said it looked sharper in the room than the Netflix footage. When you are on one lead, the other keeps living in the world instead of vanishing, which builds on the switch system from 5.
What are your thoughts on L3 being the sprint button instead of X like previous games? Do you want the old control scheme instead? Write your answers in the comments below! As always, stay tuned to Gamefragger.com for more news as it arrives.
