Donnie Yen, who recently appeared in
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, took to social media this weekend to share the exciting news that a movie based on Square Enix and United Front Games'
Sleeping Dogs is "in motion." Presumably, this means the film, which was first talked about last year, is chugging ahead with production.
Donnie Yen, a Chinese martial artist, will star as the Wei Shen, an undercover Hong Kong-American police officer who infiltrates and attempts to take down a criminal organization from the inside. Yen will have plenty of opportunity to showcase his stunt work, as the action-packed game featured plenty of martial arts fighting, racing, and boat chases. It's also fitting then that production company Original Film, with a pedigree in action flicks like the
Fast and Furious franchise, will produce the adaptation of
Sleeping Dogs.
Sleeping Dogs was released in 2012 for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. It received generally favorable reviews and was nominated for "Action Game of the Year" at the 2013 D.I.C.E. Interactive Achievement Awards. According to Square Enix, sales for
Sleeping Dogs were expected to hit about 1.75 million copies in 2013 which the publisher considered to be a "failure." Some, however, argued that the publisher had unreasonably high expectations for the game. Hopefully the upcoming movie fares better.
