Infinity Ward has shared the first details for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's multiplayer, which the developer says will deliver "grounded, precise combat built around fluid movement that provides greater control in every fight." Now that's all well and good sounding, but how does the developer plan to achieve this?

One key change in Modern Warfare 4 is the removal of bloom, a controversial mechanic where your bullets do not travel exactly where crosshairs or iron sights are aiming, and instead can strike randomly anywhere within a visible cone that expands the long you fire continuously. Unlike recoil, which physically movies your weapon as you fire, bloom is a random bullet deviation around your reticle that you cannot manually compensate for it.

Infinity Ward is approaching Modern Warfare 4 with "a new weapon-first technology stack unifies precision aiming, physical handling, realistic audio propagation, enhanced visibility, and smarter combat perception" that the developer says will result in "the most authentic Modern Warfare gunplay yet."

"Bullet trajectory, weapon motion, Operator stance, camera, audio, FOV, and target visibility all line up in one highly tuned combat fidelity system," the developer explained. "The promise is simple: no bloom, no guesswork, and no doubt. Every shot tells the truth."

With the removal of bloom, hipfire shots should feel more "direct, predictable, and connected to where the weapon is pointed." Meanwhile, recoil, convergence, and weapon handling have been rebuilt "to more directly reflect player input." Additionally, depth of field and visual effect shave been refined to improve enemy visibility without sacrificing authenticity.

"Weapons respond more naturally to player movement, stance changes, and the environment, creating more consistent behavior in every engagement," the developer noted.

Alongside refined gunplay, Modern Warfare 4 is going to expand player mobility by introducing advanced mechanics like mantling, climbing, ledge-hanging, and jumping. These options give players total freedom to adapt their tactical approach across diverse environments, creating endless opportunities to reposition, flank, navigate vertical spaces, and engage from unpredictable angles.

While Modern Warfare 4 retains the franchise's signature fast-paced combat, its movement remains grounded in realism, physicality, and intensity. The mechanics are designed to feel cinematic without sacrificing seamless, responsive control.

Modern Warfare 4 will launch with 12 Core maps for Multiplayer, along with dedicated Gunfight maps and multiple Big War maps for large-scale vehicles and infantry combat, inspired by the global locations featured in the game's campaign.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on Friday, October 23rd for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. An Open Beta is slated for later this year with pre-orders guaranteeing early access. The exact dates and times of the Beta will be announced soon, possibly during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.
