Marcus Lehto, co-creator of Halo and former Bungie creative director, has shared a pointed vision for how he would rebuild the series if given the chance. In recent comments, he described a darker, more grounded military-focused game that prioritizes player-versus-environment content as its emotional core while treating multiplayer as the competitive brain. He also made clear he believes the franchise has suffered from being outsourced and that current leadership is unlikely to care about his ideas.

"If I were to make another Halo these days, I bet many of you would not like it," Lehto wrote. "It would be a lot darker with a more grounded military feel. PvP would be the brains, PvE the heart and soul. It would not be ‘everyone’s’ Halo."

He went further on the narrative side, arguing that the existing lore has grown too convoluted for many players. His approach would involve setting much of the current continuity aside while still respecting it, then building a clearer future story that works for both longtime fans and newcomers. "I would probably bench much of the current lore—respect it, but build a new future narrative for both the old and new audiences which makes much more sense," he said.

Lehto tempered any excitement by stressing that these thoughts are purely hypothetical. He has no involvement in Halo’s current direction and expressed skepticism that Xbox leadership would take interest. "While talk of Halo’s future is certainly very exciting, I’m aware that it’s fanciful and that I doubt Asha really gives a s**t," he said, referring to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.

His strongest criticism was reserved for how the series has been developed in recent years. Lehto insisted that Halo must be made by a dedicated local team rather than spread across global outsourcing partners who, in his view, lack deep investment in the result. "Halo MUST be built by a local team together, not outsourced around the globe to a group that has ZERO investment in making something great,” he wrote. He has previously argued that outsourcing is what “killed" the series.

The comments arrive at a difficult moment for the Halo franchise. Halo Infinite faced significant challenges after launch, and the recent Halo: Campaign Evolved remake has drawn mixed reactions. Reports have also indicated that development on current Halo projects continues to rely heavily on external studios. Lehto’s public critique of that model, paired with a clear alternative creative direction, has resonated with parts of the community even as he acknowledges it is unlikely to influence official plans.

Lehto has said in the past that he would love to return to Halo. For now, his latest remarks function as both a creative pitch and a warning. A darker, more focused, locally built Halo is the game he believes the series needs. Whether anyone in a position to make that happen is listening remains an open question.
