After months of rumours and years of pleading for a game like this, SEGA has finally officially revealed Sonic Frontiers. The announcement trailer dropped during The Game Awards 2021 ceremony, which also played host to the reveal of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie trailer.

Sonic Frontiers is an action-adventure title, one in a long line of three-dimensional Sonic the Hedgehog games. This one, however, is open-world, or rather "open-zone" as the description of the trailer specifies. Think Super Mario Odyssey; that's one of the game's that will spring to mind upon seeing the direction of Sonic Frontiers, along with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and even Shadow of the Colossus.

"An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high velocity, open-zone freedom. Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands - landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts and more!"

It's a wild new direction for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that fans have been clamouring for and it will be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Holiday 2022. Just a year from now!

I hope it lands better than Mirror's Edge Catalyst. That game didn't handle the transition to open world very well, it's still a fun game, but the loss of the tracks made it feel like it lost some of what made the first game so great.
