As part of the festivities of Mario Day (March 10), Nintendo and LEGO Group teased a new line of LEGO toys based on the Super Mario franchise. The announcement was made on Twitter, with both companies posting a short teaser preview of what looks like a LEGO Mario.
This doesn't appear to be any old LEGO, though. It seems there may be some sort of LED functionality where his teeth are as well as an animated Question Block on his chest. It's possible this could just be for the preview though.
Unfortunately, no details were announced as both companies simply urged fans to "Stay tuned." Nintendo of America added "Something fun is being built!" which suggests these will be physical LEGO sets that you'll be able to construct and not necessarily a LEGO iteration of a Mario video game.
This isn't LEGO Group's first collaboration with a video game company. The toymaker previously worked with Blizzard Entertainment to create a line of Overwatch LEGO sets, as well as Mojang and Microsoft for a Minecraft line.
Nintendo has been expanding its brand and the iconic plumber has been at the forefront of the company's efforts. In addition to his popularity on consoles, Mario is now on mobile devices and soon to be in theme parks thanks to Universal Studios. While this announcement figures to be a new line of Mario-inspired LEGO construction sets, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to imagine a new video game. A number of other popular properties such as Star Wars, Batman, Harry Potter, and Marvel have also received the LEGO video game treatment.
