When Nintendo surprisingly announced Paper Mario: The Origami King, long-time fans of the series were excited to see Nintendo giving Paper Mario some love, but they were also somewhat concerned that it may be too similar to the last couple of entries.

The one thing that most fans want to know about Paper Mario: The Origami King is if the combat system will be as rewarding as the one seen in the first two games in the series, and not like the ones in Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Paper Mario: Color Splash.

Today Nintendo has shared a new gameplay video for the upcoming title, which gives players a closer look at Paper Mario: The Origami King, and it seems like this game may just be the one that fans of the series had been waiting for.

RIght off the bat, Nintendo reveals that Paper Mario: The Origami King will finally feature companions that go from a brand-new character named Olivia, a Bob-Omb with amnesia named Bobby, Professor Toad, and Kamek. According to the information shared by Nintendo, some of these companions can also aid Mario in battle.

Now, the combat is what could make or break Paper Mario: The Origami King, and Nintendo does reveal quite a bunch of details about it. Players will have to spin and slide a grid of rings in order to align enemies and fight them — which, to be quite fair, looks pretty fun.

This new battle mode gives combat an interesting puzzle-solving element, but it seems like it will still be using sticker-based attacks, and there won't be any experience points once a players win a fight. This is probably the one thing that should've been explored more, and Nintendo didn't really reveal much of this particular aspect.

With all of that said, pretty much everything else that players expect from a Paper Mario game seems to be present in Paper Mario: The Origami King, but we will have to keep waiting for Nintendo to reveal even more information about the game — especially its combat system — in the coming weeks.

Take a look:

The kingdom has been ravaged by an origami menace! Join Mario and his new partner, Olivia, as they team up with unlikely allies like Bowser and the Toads to battle evil Folded Soldiers.

Paper Mario: The Origami King will release exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on the 17th of July.
