Blizzard’s Private Server Sweep Claims Project Ascension Days Before BlizzCon

Project Ascension will shut all emulated World of Warcraft realms on September 4 after a mutual agreement with Blizzard. The timing, eight days before BlizzCon, is why Classic players are paying attention.

Project Ascension is done. The private World of Warcraft server that spent a decade running classless builds, custom seasons, and unofficial versions of Classic through Wrath will take every emulated realm offline on September 4 at 7:00 p.m. Pacific.

That is eight days before BlizzCon 2026. It is also the same week Turtle WoW’s shutdown still sits in the rearview. If you play unofficial WoW, the map just got a lot smaller.

Project lead Dutch posted the notice on Ascension’s Discord. "It has been almost 10 years since Ascension emulated WoW realms began, and the final chapter of this particular journey is coming to an end." The shutdown is part of "Ascension’s and Blizzard’s mutual agreement." Support stays up until the last day. Leftover timeline content still rolls this week. After September 4, all WoW-related material comes off the site and social channels. Development moves to "something new, unrelated to WoW or any Blizzard game."

That is the whole official statement. Characters, donations, and cash-shop items die with the realms. If you want the WoW experience, the safest bet is to play on Blizzard realms.

How We Got Here

This was not a surprise server death. Blizzard sued Project Ascension in the Central District of California on June 12. The complaint named Dutch (Derek S. Powell) and a list of other operators, accused the project of running a for-profit business on an unauthorized WoW client, and asked the court for a shutdown, an accounting of money taken in, and the handover of infringing builds. Later in June, Blizzard sent summons requests so the named people had to answer the case.

Ascension was the big one still standing after Turtle WoW and Stormforge got hit earlier in the year. Turtle’s team already said it would move on to an original MMO after settling. Ascension is now on the same road.

The project sold itself as WoW with the class locked doors taken off. Free-pick ability loadouts. Custom seasons. Realms that mixed Vanilla, Burning Crusade, and Wrath rules. A mode with a pile of extra "lore-inspired" classes. That is why it had a real population while official Classic Era sat quieter. It is also why Blizzard treated it as a business, not a nostalgic basement server.

Wowhead and half of Classic Twitter went straight to Nostalrius. Blizzard killed that vanilla private server in 2016. At BlizzCon 2017, the company announced official World of Warcraft Classic. The pattern is real enough to mention. It is not a contract.

What we actually have in 2026 is a legal sweep plus a show in 14 days. Holly Longdale already teased Classic players on a State of Azeroth stage this year and got cut off mid-sentence. There has been tracking of 1.60 / "Project Camelot" strings on Blizzard’s side. Anniversary realms just opened Black Temple. None of that is a Classic+ announcement. All of it is why this shutdown landed like a hint instead of a random lawsuit update.

Blizzard Must Be Cooking Classic+

I think Blizzard is cooking something for Classic. You do not spend a year knocking down Turtle, Stormforge, and now Ascension, then walk into BlizzCon with a mount bundle and a shrug. Private servers exist because official Classic left a hole. Classless builds, extra classes, fresh-start seasons, the stuff Ascension actually held a population with, that is the feature list people will throw at Blizzard on September 12 if the keynote is vague.

Does a lawsuit prove Classic+? No. It proves Blizzard will not let a donation-funded WoW clone sit next to a subscription. They did this when they had nothing new to sell, and they do it when they do. The timing is what makes the first reading hard to ignore. Ascension dies September 4. BlizzCon is September 12 and 13. If the company was only cleaning house, it could have waited until October. Closing the biggest remaining unofficial Classic+ project a week before the show looks like they do not want that comparison live while they talk.

The risk on the other side is the same one Nostalrius players learned. Official Classic was not the private server with the extra systems. It was a closer copy of 2006. If Classic+ is Season of Discovery with a new name, or a 1.60 patch on Era, a lot of Ascension players will log into Anniversary, hate the class locks, and bounce. If it is a real plus, with new systems Blizzard is willing to support, then this week is the last week those players spend on a server that was always going to lose in court.

Play the official realms that exist. Black Temple is open on Anniversary right now. Save the parade for the keynote. Just do not pretend the last three private-server funerals are a coincidence.

Do you think Classic+ is coming at BlizzCon, or is this only Blizzard clearing the board? Let us know in the comments.
