Blizzard Entertainment has given the weather in the World of Warcraft Forever beta a major upgrade, adding pre-storm effects, multi-stage rain, and full thunderstorms with lightning that lights up the world around players.
The change arrived with the latest beta build following last Thursday's (October 15th) maintenance, and it did not take long for players to spot it. Screenshots of lightning lighting up cities started making the rounds almost right away, and Matt Heyman, the lead environment artist on World of Warcraft and WoW Forever, responded the next day (October 16th) with a simple "It didn't take long for you all to notice the lightning :D"
The official World of Warcraft account then confirmed the feature later that same day, showing off a storm rolling in over one of the game's inns.
How The New Weather System Works
Heyman went into more detail about the system in a follow-up post, explaining that the team wanted the weather in WoW Forever to be a lot more than a simple rain effect. He credited the game's sound team for adding new ambient audio that plays before the rain even begins.
"With weather in Wow Forever we wanted to do more than just simple rain. The sound team hooked us up with some pre-rain ambient sound (and much more). Before the rain starts to fall you can see the fog and clouds roll in and hear the rumble of distant thunder as the storm approaches," Heyman wrote.
"From there, the rain has several stages of intensity and has a chance of culminating in a full on thunderstorm, lightning and all," he added.
That build-up gives the weather a much more natural feel. Instead of rain simply switching on, players can see a storm coming before it hits, and the strength of the rain can change as it goes. When a storm reaches its peak, the lightning flashes use the game's dynamic lighting, which is why the strikes can briefly light up buildings, streets, and terrain around the player.
Snowstorms Have Been Spotted Too
Lightning has been getting most of the attention, but players exploring the beta have also come across heavier snowstorm effects in the Alterac Mountains. Blizzard has not formally detailed the snow changes the way it has with the rain and lightning, though they appear to be part of the same push to make the world feel more alive.
The weather upgrade fits with what Blizzard has been showing for WoW Forever so far. At BlizzCon, the team held a panel called Evolving a Timeless World, where it went over plans for improved fog, lighting, and water across Azeroth. Those changes are meant to modernize the look of the classic game world while keeping the zones, quests, and layouts that longtime players remember.
A Big Deal For Atmosphere
Weather has been part of World of Warcraft since its early days, but the original effects were fairly basic by modern standards. Rain and snow would fall, though they rarely changed how a zone actually looked or sounded in any meaningful way. Adding fog, distant thunder, staged rain, and lightning that interacts with the lighting system should make places like Elwynn Forest, Stranglethorn Vale, and the Alterac Mountains feel very different depending on the weather when you pass through.
It is worth keeping in mind that all of this is still in beta, so the effects could be adjusted before WoW Forever fully launches. Blizzard has not said whether every zone will get the full range of weather stages or if some areas will stick with lighter effects.
Would you rather see Blizzard keep pushing these modern visual upgrades in WoW Forever, or do you prefer the classic world to stay closer to how it originally looked?
