The Last of Us wrapped up the ''okay'' Ellie gave in response to Joel swearing all of what he told her was true. This is followed up on in The Last of Us Part II, which uses a very unchronological story structure. The show could instead show events in order, thus completely recontexualizing the narrative (and leaving room to expand on characters, like in 1, 4 and 7, or between 3 and 4). Either way, this also serves as a summary of the game.
The Last of Us Part II and possible season 2 spoilers ahead!
The first part kicks off 4 years ago with Tracking Lessons. Here, Abby frees a zebra with her dad Jerry and convinces him to operate on Ellie. Abby then finds her dad murdered, and swears to kill Joel. This is an effective way to show Abby's side right away. It then jumps to the game's Prologue, which sees Joel & Tommy go on patrol. The patrol ends with Joel spilling the whole thing to Tommy, and upon returning to Jackson gifts Ellie a guitar.
The second part starts 3 years ago with Abby & Owen having fun exploring in The Aquarium. Abby then expresses she wants revenge and has no intention of giving up, despite all leads having dried up. Meanwhile across the Pacific West, Joel takes Ellie to a museum in Birthday Gift for, well... her birthday. There, Ellie spots a mural calling the Fireflies liars, which starts seeding doubts in her. Regardless, it's an episode of (relative) happiness.
The third part solely focuses on Ellie & Joel 2 years ago. It starts with Finding Strings, where Ellie, Joel & Tommy go on patrol. However, Ellie's doubts start to grow more after they find a dead couple, but Joel sticks to his story. Ellie decides to head back to Salt Lake City in St. Mary's Hospital, and confirms her doubts. On the same hill outside Jackson, Ellie again confronts Joel. Only now, Joel confirms what really happened. ''Okay,'' Ellie replies, mirroring their earlier conversation. ''But we are done,'' she adds this time.
The fourth part begins with Abby visiting Owen in Winter Visit, and telling him they found Joel & Tommy in Jackson and plan to head there soon. It then jumps a few months to the day of the dance. After a brief altercation at the dance, Ellie storms off. Later that night, Ellie passes Joel's house, who is on his porch playing guitar. Before cutting to black, Ellie gives one last look of despondence to Joel (during her epiphany in Santa Barbara, this can instead be a more bittersweet look, impying Ellie remembers it with more joy).
The Events of March 2nd
The fifth part starts where the game starts, with Waking Up. Ellie & Dina have a snowball fight, are briefed by Jesse, and head out on patrol. It is directly followed by Patrol, which sees Ellie & Dina clear out a few walkers and smoke weed while sheltering from a storm. Unlike the game, it doesn't have to be cut in half with The Overlook, as Abby is already introduced, and instead can focus entirely on building up Ellie & Dina's relationship further.
The sixth part shifts perspective to Abby with The Overlook, showing she made it to Jackson. After waking up, Abby heads out for Joel, despite Owen telling her the town is too fortified. Just like in The Horde, Abby is quickly overrun by infected, but is soon saved by the very man she is hunting. They flee back to Abby's hideout, where Abby's crew realizes who she brought in. Before Joel can react though, he's shot by Abby. Joel still taunts Abby, but is cut short when Abby hits him in the head with a golf club. Cut to black.
The finale opens with Jesse walking in on Dina & Ellie, sharing Joel & Tommy are missing. They head out, and like in The Chalet, Ellie is first to find them, but is quickly restrained. Ellie then witnesses Joel's brutal murder, and before she is knocked out, she swears to kill Abby. The next day, similar to Packing Up, Joel is buried, Tommy races off after Abby's crew and makes Maria keep Ellie & Dina in Jackson. Instead, Maria lets them go and ends them on:
''Bring my dumbass husband home in one piece''
