Ever since the very first teaser for The Last of Us Part II, fans have wondered about Joel's role in the sequel, with some speculating that the character met his maker during the time between the two games. And while the recent trailer quelled those theories, it didn't shed a lot of light on how he will factor into the story.
Fortunately, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, writer and director Neil Druckmann shared some new details on how Joel and his relationship with Ellie has changed since the original The Last of Us.
"The weight of the events, the choices made in the first game are coming into the second game," Druckmann said, explaining that Joel's relationship with Ellie's has been strained by his decisions. "Obviously, Joel is still very capable. This guy has survived for many, many years in this brutal world. How that plays out, you’ll have to wait and see."
The director didn't reveal any specific choices that have affected their relationship, but as many fans know, the first game ended with Joel lying to Ellie to about what happened to the Fireflies — a secret that would definitely have a lasting impact on the two if discovered.
The Last of Us Part II is currently scheduled to be released on February 21, 2020.
