The Last of Us Part II was one of the most highly anticipated games of this generation of consoles, and fans were ecstatic to finally find out what has been going on in the lives of Joel and Ellie since they last saw them after the gut-wrenching final moments of the first game.

Exactly a week ago, Naughty Dog's sequel to the critically acclaiemd The Last of Us was finally released, and the reception has been rather mixed. While the media seems to blindly love it, mainstream players, as well as most fans of the first game, were left severely disappointed by the story.

Way before The Last of Us Part II was released, however, fans were already disappointed by the fact that multiplayer was not making a comeback — especially since Naughty Dog have been delivering pretty great multiplayer experiences since Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and The Last of Us was no exception.

Some fans were still hoping that multiplayer would be added via downloadabe content for The Last of Us Part II, but it seems that this will not be the case, as Creative Director Neil Druckmann reveals that they have no plans to develop downloadable content for the recently released title.

A multiplayer mode isn't something that the developers may have added via paid DLC any way, so this is likely making allusion to new story content in the same vein of The Last of Us: Left Behind or Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which are games that expand on the characters' stories, but aren't really part of the game's main story.

Druckmann said this during a live podcast with Kinda Funny Games, where he also hinted at the possibility of Naughty Dog currently working on a multiplayer experience of sorts for The Last of Us Part II, but he didn't really dig deeper into this; until officially confirmed, however, consider this a tease.

If you want to watch the podcast in its entirety, be sure to check out Kinda Funny Games' video down below, and leave us a comment telling us what you thought of the news about potential DLC for The Last of Us Part II.

Take a look:

Five years after their dangerous journey across the post-pandemic United States, Ellie and Joel have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming. Living amongst a thriving community of survivors has allowed them peace and stability, despite the constant threat of the infected and other, more desperate survivors. When a violent event disrupts that peace, Ellie embarks on a relentless journey to carry out justice and find closure. As she hunts those responsible one by one, she is confronted with the devastating physical and emotional repercussions of her actions.

The Last of Us Part II is currently available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
