Star Wars is officially heading to the table in 2027, and Wizards of the Coast now has names for the first two books. During the Disney and Lucasfilm publishing panel at New York Comic Con on October 9, the company revealed D&D | Star Wars Core Rules and D&D | Star Wars, Tyro Squadron: Adventures, the first releases in the Dungeons & Dragons crossover with a galaxy far, far away. Select artwork was shown at the panel as well, including the cover of the adventure book.

The official Dungeons & Dragons account shared the news shortly after the panel, and the post has already passed 5,000 likes. Check it out below:

Tyro Squadron: Adventures

Tyro Squadron: Adventures is the pre-written campaign of the pair, and it puts players right in the middle of the Galactic Civil War. Wizards describes it this way: "In D&D | Star Wars, Tyro Squadron: Adventures, take the fight to the Empire as part of a secret Rebel crew. Set during the Original Trilogy, these new stories unfold as Luke and Leia fight their own battles across the galaxy." The company adds that players will fly daring missions, explore new corners of the galaxy, and help shape the Rebellion's story in their own way.

That setting places the campaign somewhere between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi, the most recognizable stretch of the entire saga. Since Luke, Leia, and the rest of the main cast are off fighting their own battles, the party gets to carve out its own corner of the war without stepping on the moments fans already know from the films. The squadron name and the promise of daring missions also point to starship combat playing a big part in the book.

The cover shows armed Rebel heroes, stormtroopers, a droid, and Darth Vader looming over the scene. Wizards has brought in some well known names for the artwork, including sci-fi artist Amir Zand, whose work includes the Halo Encyclopedia and box art for Dune: Imperium, and longtime Magic: The Gathering artist Kieran Yanner. Both contributed pieces that were shown during the reveal.

Of course, Dungeon Masters can still set their own campaigns in any era or corner of the galaxy they like. The official adventure simply gives groups a ready-made story in the classic Rebellion era for anyone who wants to jump in without building a campaign from scratch.

D&D | Star Wars Core Rules

The second book is D&D | Star Wars Core Rules, which will serve as the main rules set for running fifth edition D&D games in the Star Wars universe. This is a notable change from how Wizards is handling its first crossover. Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft is built on top of the revised 2024 Player's Handbook, while Star Wars is getting its own core rulebook. Wizards has not shared any specifics yet on how classes, Force powers, blasters, or lightsabers will work, and says more on the Core Rules will be revealed later.

Fans will not have to wait too long for the next look. Wizards confirmed that a starfighter encounter is coming to Star Wars Celebration, which takes place April 1 to 4, 2027, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. That show also marks the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars film, so it is a fitting place to show off a Rebellion era game.

The team behind the project is clearly excited about it. Wizards senior game designer Makenzie De Armas shared the reveal on X and wrote, "I'm so proud of the entire team behind D&D | Star Wars. I've never had so much genuine fun, joy, and catharsis working on a project. More soon!" She followed it up with a nod to the prequels, adding "This is where the fun begins."

Part Of D&D Universes Beyond

Both books fall under D&D Universes Beyond, a new line of crossovers that Wizards announced during its D&D Vision Keynote at Gen Con on July 30. The idea comes from Magic: The Gathering, which has been running its own Universes Beyond sets since 2021. At Gen Con, the D&D team confirmed that the Star Wars collaboration would anchor the Season of Rebellion in 2027, but no other details were given until now.

First up is Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, made with Blizzard Entertainment for the Season of Champions. The gameplay expansion includes rules for all 13 World of Warcraft classes, 16 playable species such as Pandaren, Tauren, and Worgen, more than 60 new spells, and seven of the MMO's dungeons reworked for tabletop play. It is available to preorder now and releases on November 17, with early access on D&D Beyond for Master Tier subscribers beginning November 3.

Star Wars also has a long history in tabletop roleplaying, and this is the second time Wizards has held the license. West End Games released Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game in 1987, and Wizards took over in 2000 with a d20 version that ran until 2010, including the popular Saga Edition. Fantasy Flight Games followed with Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny, which used its Narrative Dice System. That line moved to Edge Studio in 2020 and has stayed in print without any new books since then.

Neither book has an exact release date, price, or preorder listing yet, with 2027 as the only confirmed window. More details should arrive closer to Star Wars Celebration in April.

Would you rather play through the official Tyro Squadron campaign as part of a secret Rebel crew, or use the Core Rules to build your own story somewhere else in the Star Wars timeline?
