Microsoft, like many publishers, is looking to avoid a showdown with Grand Theft Auto 6. With Take-Two reaffirming a November 19 release date for Rockstar Games' upcoming blockbuster, it's just about assured that GTA 6 will dominate holiday sales, likely cutting into the momentum of any other title releasing around the same window.
Acknowledging a packed year of massive releases — from the newly revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to Rockstar's long-awaited juggernaut — Microsoft is trying to establish a release calendar that positions its own titles for maximum success.
Unfortunately for Xbox fans, that means delaying the highly anticipated Fable reboot into 2027.
"This is year is packed with incredible games for XBOX players to enjoy, from Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto VI," a post on the official Xbox social media account reads.
"In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we’re moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves. We’re excited to be giving players a major new look at Fable, as well as our broader lineup, at XBOX Games Showcase on June 7."
Prior to the this announcement, there had been rumblings that Microsoft had quietly delayed Fable internally. Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb reported that Microsoft was concerned about Fable running up against GTA 6, which is poised to break sales records and dominate the holiday season when it launches in November.
While there's certainly excitement surrounding the launch of Fable, which marks a return to the franchise after more than 15 years, going up against Grand Theft Auto 6 would've almost certainly impacted sales.
"We talked about Forza Horizon 6 and how the team at Playground is doing really well. Also doing really well on Fable. The game is in great shape. The team feels really good. We're excited about where the game is," Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer for Xbox, said in the Xbox Podcast.
"We want to make sure that that game has a window all to its own, so we are going to move it from this fall to February," he continued. "And again, we really just want it to have its own moment to shine. And related to Fable, we will be seeing more of it in Showcase. So we're going to have plenty for people to see. It really is coming together well, exciting stuff, and then we're going to move to February.”
Developed by Playground Games (the team behind Forza Horizon), there's some incredible hype surrounding Fable despite the developer's lack of history in the third-person action RPG genre. Still, there's reason for fans to be excited.
They're taking things back to the franchise's roots but upgrading everything with modern tech. Albion is now a totally seamless open world built on their own ForzaTech engine. This world is also packed with over 1,000 unique, fully voiced NPCs who have their own daily routines and personalities, making it feel incredibly alive and lived-in.
The old morality system is getting a massive overhaul. Instead of a simple good-vs-evil meter, NPCs will actually react to you based on what they’ve seen you do or the rumors they've heard. Your choices will even leave permanent, physical marks on the world itself.
As for combat, the classic "Strength, Skill, and Will" trio is back, just completely updated for today. Expect fluid fighting where you can seamlessly swap between weapons mid-combo and a solid targeting system to help you handle crowds.
While it's a bit of a bummer we'll now have to wait until February to play Fable, I'd rather see it moved to a date where it can truly stand out rather than get overshadowed by the behemoth that is Grand Theft Auto 6 along with other holiday blockbusters.
