Battletoads is a beat 'em up series of games developed by Rare back in the early 90s with its first game releasing for the Nintendo back in 1991. The game was inspired by the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as it stars 3 anthropomorphic toads—Rash, Zitz, and Pimple— that even got as far as getting a pilot for its own show but never really saw the light of day.
The game's popularity even had the toads crossingover with
Double Dragon—another popular beat 'em up from the 80s and 90s—in a game aptly titled
Battletoads & Double Dragon., which is actually the last game that was ever released on consoles back in 1993. Battletoads for Arcade was released a year later but that would be the last official title of the series.
Things are begining to look better for the
Battletoads as Microsoft has just announced a new game that is set to release in 2019.
Battletoads 2019(tentative name until new notice) didn't really give away much so we don't know if it will be a beat 'em up in the classic side-scrolling style, or if it is completely redefined for newer audiences in mind. What we do know is that the game will feature body morphing mash-ups, 3 player couch co-op(thank goodness for this), and 4K hand-drawn 2.5D graphics—and is likely to be an Xbox exclusive given that Rare is now owned by Microsoft.
