Pokémon GO initially launched all the way back in July of 2016. The mobile game was an unprecedented and absolutely massive hit when it first became available for both iOS and Android devices. You'd be forgiven for thinking that this popularity slowly decreased over time and thereby the profitability of the app itself. However, it turns out that this couldn't be further from the truth.

Recently, Sensor Tower shared their data on just how financially successful Pokémon GO was in 2019. Suffice it to say, last year was the mobile game's best year yet in terms of monetary gain. Niantic's smash hit generated almost $900 million through players' spending. It's estimated that Pokémon GO garnered $894 million — to be specific.

In 2016, Pokémon GO earned $832 million while there was a steep dropoff in 2017 wherein the mobile game only earned $589 million. However, with major updates and the like, Niantic revived Pokémon GO in 2018 and earned $816 million. It will certainly be interesting to see how the mobile game fares in 2020.
