The Blue Blur has broken his own record. SEGA announced today that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has officially become the top-grossing video game movie adaptation of all time with $331.64 million in global box office sales. The record was previously held by its predecessor which was released in early 2020 (before all the COVID shutdowns) and brought in $319.71 million.
Sonic 2 had recently become the top-grossing video game movie adaptation of all time at the domestic box office with $162.71 million, also surpassing the first film's $148.97. But with the international haul of $168.9 million, it's now breaking global records as well. And this international number doesn't yet include Japan where it doesn't release until August 19.
The sequel's box office success has already led to the confirmation of a third theatrical film, which is slated to arrive in 2023. SEGA and Paramount Pictures are also working on a live-action Sonic series for the Paramount Plus streaming service. The series will focus on Knuckles, who was voiced by Idris Elba and made his debut in the sequel film. There's also the Sonic Prime series coming to Netflix worldwide at some point this year.
Beyond the movie and television medium, SEGA has big plans for Sonic in the months ahead. On June 23, fans will be able to play the classics Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles in the new collection Sonic Origins.
Later this year, SEGA will also release Sonic Frontier, the first game in the series to feature open-world gameplay. In it, Sonic will explore the Starfall Islands.
