After being first announced at E3 2019, FromSoftware and George R. R. Martin's Elden Ring video game has released a new trailer and revealed a January 2022 release date. Check out the new footage below.
The project started out back in 2017, after Miyazaki (a fan of Martin's novels) reached out to the author to gauge his interest in collaborating on a project. Enticed by creative freedom, Martin developed the backstory or bible for the game, which Miyazaki used to write a more detail narrative- a process he described as using a "dungeon master's handbook in a tabletop RPG."
While two year is not a relatively long time for a big AAA game to be in development, trailers and any sort of update for the game were few and far between, driving fans of Dark Souls and GRRM bonkers. Given that the game was initially teased as being a lot bigger than any of the previous Dark Souls game and to lean heavier into more RPG-like mechanics, it's not hard to see why fans would be anxious for even the smallest of updates.
Elden Ring is currently set to be released on Jan. 21, 2022 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC.
