While
Star Wars: Battlefront hasn't exactly been a hit with the fans, Disney is hoping another competitive shooter will be received much more pleasantly. Lucasfilm and Disney announced this week
Star Wars: Rivals, a real-time competitive action shooter for mobile devices.
Celebrating the iconic rivalries of a galaxy far, far away, the game features cover-based PvP skirmishes
"where players build the ultimate team to challenge opponents in combat arenas." The description of combat reads:
Dominate your opponents in this fast-paced PvP shooter as you challenge players cross-platform in real-time combat arenas. Avoid taking damage by strategically utilizing your surroundings, targeting and destroying your enemies with mobile-optimized controls. Swap your Heroes in-and-out during the heat of battle, instantly altering how the game is played.
Playable Heroes will span all eras of the franchise, and include Luke Skywalker, Jyn Erso, Poe Dameron, Lando Calrissian, and many more. Of course, while some will be available from the start, others will have to be unlocked as you advance through the Arena Leagues. Assembling your team will be important as well, as each character fills different roles for you to mix and match for tactical advantages. Additionally, Heroes boast powerful weapons and special abilities to help aid in combat, like Chewbacca's bowcaster and Darth Vader's Force Choke.
As is the case with most mobile games,
Star Wars: Rivals will support guilds, allowing you to team up with friends and climb the Arena leaderboards, earning Credits, Data Tapes, and Reward Crates to unlock featured Heroes and level up your characters.
Star Wars: Rivals is available for pre-registration on
Google Play now. If you download the game from Google Play, you'll receive exclusive access to death trooper support units (
Rogue One's black-armor clad elite Imperial forces). App Store users will get access to Rebel Special Forces (SpecForces) support units for a limited time when the game launches.
