Zack Snyder's sci-fi epic Rebel Moon is one of the most anticipated movies coming to Netflix and as such, the streaming service is already looking to spawn it into a multimedia franchise. In addition to the upcoming movie, Netflix is also developing a game based on the brand-new IP.
Announced during gamescom this week, the new Rebel Moon game is being developed by Super Evil Megacorp in partnership with Netflix and filmmaker Zack Snyder. Not much is known about the game other than it being a four-player co-op action title that's exclusive to Netflix members.
Drawing comparisons to Star Wars and other sci-fi space operas, Rebel Moon follows Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former member of the Imperium now seeking redemption for her past as she rallies a group of warriors to fight back against the brutal interstellar royal empire.
While story details for the game weren't revealed, Super Evil Megacorp confirmed it is working with the filmmaker and the movie team "to provide an additive and detailed look at the universe and factions you will experience in the films."
Shortly after the game was announced, Snyder confirmed that its story would be set just after the events of both movies and expand upon the world.
"...the universe of Rebel Moon is vast and exotic, dark and dangerous; truly a fantasy primed for rich storytelling and the committed dreams of our development team," the developer said. "Building worlds is our passion and the opportunity to collaborate on this one has been a dream come true, making us equal parts excited and terrified by the creative challenge ahead."
No release date for the game was announced but Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire will arrive on Netflix on December 22, 2023. It will be followed by Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver just a few months later on April 19, 2023. Seeing as how the game is set after the events of these movies, it's likely to arrive sometime later in 2024 or beyond. In fact, we can expect the next intel drop to come sometime next year.
Super Evil Megacorp is best known for developing multiplayer games for mobile devices. Some of their most popular titles include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate, Catalyst Black, and Vainglory. As Netflix Games can be played primarily on mobile devices, we can expect the Rebel Moon game to be available on phones and tablets.
