Ryan Reynolds is a prolific actor and one of the most famous people on the face of the earth. Despite this, when the first trailer for Detective Pikachu dropped, you might have thought that he was an odd choice to play the titular Pokémon. He usually stars in comedies but they're typically adult in nature and R-rated — Deadpool comes to mind.

Well, it turns out that, Detective Pikachu being so unlike his usual work is exactly what drew him to the project. Currently, Reynolds has two children with Blake Lively — and is expecting a third. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Reynolds admitted that he wanted to be involved with the live-action Pokémon film so that his kids could actually watch one of their dad's films.

"I was excited to do a film that my kids would love. I don't do a lot of films that are not rated-R. For me, that's a big one."

Though, given his natural tendency to venture beyond the realm of PG-13, Reynolds has joked in the past that a full R-rated Detective Pikachu movie could be put together with just his outtakes. Yes, he was probably just kidding but it's still something funny to imagine.
