After an incredible box office run that saw Sonic the Hedgehog 2 become the top-grossing video game adaptation of all-time, the well-received sequel is finally headed to digital and home release. For those who have been waiting to catch the Blue Blur's latest adventure, you can now stream it on the Paramount+ streaming service today, May 24, in the United States and Canada. It's also available for purchase across digital platforms such as Prime Video for $19.99.
If you prefer the more traditional physical copy, you'll have to wait a bit longer. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 9. There will also be the option to purchase the first film as a bundle with the sequel in a 2-movie Collection on Digital and Blu-ray.
While streaming may be a bit more convenient, there are some perks to purchasing the Digital, 4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray release, including nearly an hour of bonus features (TBA) highlighted by an all-new exclusive animated short, Sonic Drone Home, starring Sonic, Tails and Knuckles.
The world’s favorite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. From the filmmakers behind The Fast and the Furious and Deadpool, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Jim Carrey returning, alongside new additions Shemar Moore, with Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as the voice of Tails.
If you're looking for more adventures starring the Blue Blur beyond the big screen, SEGA has plenty of new projects in the works. In addition to the third theatrical film coming in 2023, there's a live-action series coming to Paramount+ which will focus on Knuckles. And later this year, Netflix will debut Sonic Prime, an upcoming 3D animated series.
On the gaming front, we've got Sonic Origins releasing on June 23. This will feature the three classics Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles all in one collection. Later this year, we'll get our first open-world game starring Sonic in Sonic Frontier.
