The first official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 debuted just the other day during the annual Game Awards ceremony — which also played host to the reveal of the very first open-world Sonic the Hedgehog video game.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will see Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz reprise their roles as Dr. Robotnik and Sonic the Hedgehog and also introduce Idris Elba and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Knuckles the Echidna and Tails the Fox respectively.
However, the video game movie sequel might have yet another animalistic speedster up its sleeve. That's at least what this detail in the trailer points to. Fans of the franchise have noticed that soldiers can be seen in that trailer wearing a unique "G" emblem. Those familiar with the Sonic the Hedgehog video games will know this represents the G.U.N. organisation.
This agency has ties to Shadow the Hedgehog, a dark clone of the titular, blue speedster. Thus, many are convinced that Shadow will feature in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 even if he's just relegated to a post-credits scene. In the games, Shadow is dubbed "the ultimate life form" by his creator, Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey's character in the films).
All the pieces are there; Shadow will more than likely be the next evil version of Sonic to grace the silver screen, after Knuckles, in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
