In Sonic the Hedgehog 2's post-credits scene, we were introduced to Shadow the Hedgehog. G.U.N. Commander Sam Walters learned of a secret research facility from half a century ago housing Project: Shadow, though with Agent Stone in earshot, it appears he'll be teaming up with Gerald Robotnik's creation to avenge his grandson, Eggman.
Writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller recently attended Klamath Community College's Comic-Con (via Screen Rant), and the latter shared a few hints about where Shadow's story is going next.
"The fact that Shadow is clearly going to be in the franchise moving forward," Miller teased, "I don’t think it’s revealing anything to say we’d love to incorporate elements from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, his solo spinoff game." The latter was poorly received by gamers, though there's definitely material in there that could be useful to the next movie.
Following the sequel's recent box office success (the movies have grossed a combined $705.2 million), Paramount Pictures announced both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and a Knuckles spinoff coming to Paramount+.
The threequel will arrive in theaters in 2024, and there's currently no word on who will play Shadow or what else we can look forward to seeing in the movie. Jim Carrey's future as Dr. Robotnik is similarly unclear as the sequel left his fate somewhat ambiguous (presumably in case the actor makes good on his plans to retire).
