Just like Remedy Entertainment’s previous projects,
Control will be a psychological thriller, but it doesn't mean that the upcoming metroidvania will be even reportedly similar to
Max Payne, Alan Wake, or
Quantum Break gameplay-wise. While
Control will borrow some ideas from those titles (like
QB’s time-warping mechanics and
MP’s modified bullet-time), it will be a completely fresh experience.
"
Previous Remedy games tended to be quite linear,"
Control's Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen said in a recent interview with Game Informer. "
Here, we have shifted our goal so that we have more complex scenarios with our different abilities and you choose the way you want to fight."
"
Through the main campaign, you upgrade your security clearance through this world," Kasurinen continued. "
And to do that you can actually unlock more different kind of doors and gateways. Early in the game, you will face certain doors you can't access yet. As you go through the campaign and through the world, you get a higher clearance and you can go back to these areas that you had to skip initially. [...] we have also areas that are limited by the ability you have, for instance, levitation."
The studio also wants to give you more freedom when it comes to approaching different obstacles, allowing you to modify the protagonist's attributes and abilities. "
It means that the combination of what abilities you have, how you have upgraded them, what weapon mods and character mods you have actually affects the way you fight your way through these scenarios," Kasurinen said.
Yesterday, we learned that
Control will be released at some point between June and September, so more details on the upcoming game should be revealed at this year's E3 that will be held June 11-13.
After a secretive agency in New York is invaded by an otherworldly threat, you become the new Director struggling to regain Control. This supernatural third-person action-adventure game will challenge you to master a combination of supernatural abilities, modifiable loadouts and reactive environments, while fighting through a deep and unpredictable world.
Control is coming to PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One this summer.
