Unlike Remedy's previous video games,
Control will be set in a huge interconnected building that contains gates to alternate dimensions, worlds, and even timelines. According to the Finnish developer,
Control is the most unique thing they have ever made – and quite possibly also the most explosive one.
In
Control, the player will take on the role of Jesse Faden, the newly appointed Director of the Federal Bureau of Control, and the first female protagonist in Remedy's history. "
Jesse Faden is the protagonist in Control and when Sam Lake and the writing team were figuring out the story with Mikael [Kasurinen, Control's director] we decided we really liked working with Courtney Hope was Beth in Quantum Break," Communications Director at Remedy Thomas Puha explained. "
I mean, Courtney is just really a kick-ass woman and has a great attitude, and when the story started coming together we’re like well, this seems like tailor-made for Courtney."
"
When she comes to the Oldest House where the game takes place [...], the Bureau is this sort of old boys club, they’re used to controlling things," Puha added. "
When Hiss invades the Oldest House and robs it the Bureau appear like they’re losing control and having a hard time dealing with that. Then Jesse gets into the situation and challenges things, so I think it makes for a pretty interesting setup that people will experience when they play the finished product."
When it comes to the new metroidvania’s main playground, the player will have a unique opportunity to explore the Oldest House, the Bureau's headquarters invaded by the unknown alien force – the Hiss. "
So the Oldest House is really kind of like a large, interconnected space. There are several different sectors and the deeper you go into the building, the stranger it gets because there are other dimensions that seep into this place of power, which the Oldest House is," Puha said.
"
As you unlock the abilities, throughout the main campaign, you might early on be in a certain location and see there’s doors and areas that it looks like you should be able to grow but you just can’t yet. Later, you’ll get something, and you’ll say; ‘maybe I should go back,’ and a whole new area opens up and you explore. [...] You can equip mods on weapons, and character abilities, you’re going to really have to go and explore and fight some of the toughest enemies around, to get the best mods and resources. So there is a lot of exploration in the game," he concluded.
Considering that
Control is releasing this summer, we definitely will learn new details on Remedy’s upcoming title in the coming months– and maybe even at E3 2019 that is finally starting next month.
After a secretive agency in New York is invaded by an otherworldly threat, you become the new Director struggling to regain Control. This supernatural third-person action-adventure game will challenge you to master a combination of supernatural abilities, modifiable loadouts and reactive environments, while fighting through a deep and unpredictable world.
Control is coming to PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on August 27, 2019.
