Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions and Los Angeles-based animation production company Line Mileage have announced that a Death Stranding adult animated feature film is in development.
Aaron Guzikowski (Raise by Wolves) is writing the script.
In a statement to the press, Guzikowski stated, "I love the world of Death Stranding, it’s so creatively freeing, so beautifully dark and yet hopeful; I’m so excited and honored that Hideo Kojima, whose work I’ve long admired, has invited me to dwell within his creation, to birth new stories into this fertile, mind-bending universe."
He continued, "Drawing and animation have always been near and dear to my heart, so to finally get to play in this space is a dream come true.”
Line Mileage CCO Daniel Dominguez also chimed in, remarking, "As an avid gamer I can say, unequivocally, Death Stranding is the most cinematic, thought-provoking video game I have ever played. Playing it gave me the same emotional rush, visceral punch, and intellectual pleasure I had the first time I watched Blade Runner, or Ghost in the Shell. Adapting it into a form it so naturally evokes is an honor. "
The animated pic will be a seperate project from the previously announced live-action adaptation that has setup shop at A24.
In the video game world of Death Stranding, a cataclysmic event has occurred that blurs the line between life and death. Invisible, ghostly entities called Beached Things (BTs) roam, causing massive explosions (voidouts) when they consume the living. A mysterious rain, Timefall, rapidly ages whatever it touches.
You play as Sam Porter Bridges, a deliveryman with the unique ability to "repatriate" (return from death) and sense BTs with the aid of a Bridge Baby (BB). His mission, given by the Bridges organization, is to reconnect the isolated remnants of humanity across America. This involves delivering vital supplies to scattered settlements (KNOTs) and linking them to the Chiral Network, a communication system crucial for unity.
Sam faces numerous challenges, including the enigmatic terrorist Higgs, who can control BTs, and the resilient porter Fragile. The narrative delves into themes of connection, isolation, and existence, uncovering a complex web of family ties and scientific mysteries surrounding the Death Stranding. Ultimately, Sam's deliveries evolve into a profound personal journey to understand his past and prevent a final, devastating extinction event.
The game features celebrity performances from the likes of Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo Del Toro and more.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which adds Elle Fanning to the cast, is set for release on June 26.
