At its core, Remedy Entertainment's
Control is a psychological thriller, but gameplay-wise, it's a pure metroidvania. Not only you will have a chance to freely explore the game's playground – known as the Oldest House – but also experiment with new powers to discover previously unreachable locations.
Unlike Remedy's last offering,
Quantum Break, learning those special abilities won't depend on your story progression as the more side missions you complete, the more powerful the main protagonist Jesse Faden, the newly promoted director of the titular Federal Bureau of Control, will become.
According to
Control's Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen, Remedy has slightly shifted their goals, so they "
want to go for more complex scenarios, more different abilities, and you choose the way that you want to fight,” he said in an interview with Game Informer. “
It means that the combination of what abilities you have, how you have upgraded them, and what weapon mods and character mods you have actually affects the way you should fight your way through the scenarios.”
When it comes to the aforementioned side missions, they are the best way to master Jesse's powerful telekinetic and telepathic abilities. Those
Objects of Power "are really fundamental and important parts of the game are actually in the side missions,” Kasurinen explained. “
If the player, for instance, doesn't get the Shield then what does that mean for combat? It might make certain fights really tough later on because it's optional. You don't have to go and get the Shield if you don’t want to.”
To make the gameplay loop a bit less repetitive, Remedy will introduce players to
Bureau Alerts, random in-game events that will grant you valuable loot if you manage to complete them in time.
Remedy has also officially confirmed recent leaks from the Microsoft Store and
Control is indeed coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (as an Epic Games Store exclusive) on August 27, 2019.
