Lucasfilm Games Vice President and Respawn Entertainment's CEO — Douglas Rilley and Vince Zampella, respectively — have recently revealed that
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has, indeed, been influenced by previous Star Wars titles like the
Jedi Knight and
Knights of the Old Republic series.
In an interview with Star Wars.com, Reilley and Zampella were asked if the game draws, in any way, inspiration from
Knights of the Old Republic or the
Jedi Knight series, to what both had different responses that still allude to the game actually taking cues from several
Star Wars games.
"
Not necessarily directly," replied Zampella by also adding that "
those are games that we’ve all played, and when Stig[the game's Director] and I sat down and said, “We want to do this,” we didn’t want to do a specific sequel or a copy of anything. It was just like, 'We want to make a third-person, action-adventure, Jedi-hero game.' That was the core directive."
Reilly then adds that they "
all grew up playing these games, so there’s a certain amount of influence that comes from playing them." Zampella then interjects with a "
naturally, yeah. And a hundred other games."
"
Exactly right. It’s not just Star Wars games; it’s games in general. So it’s coming with a very clear perspective on the kind of games [Respawn makes], and working with our teams to go, 'Okay, how do we make that a great Star Wars experience together?' And then it will hopefully have its own identity that everyone else will use at a later date to go: 'Oh, are you trying to make a game just like Jedi: Fallen Order?'"
This is very reassuring, given that the latest
Star Wars titles, especially those that focus too heavily on multiplayer rather than single player, have not been well-received by the fans, and it seems that Respawn has set out to delivering a proper single player adventure that will leave fans satisfied in the same way that titles like
Knights of the Old Republic and
Jedi Knight have in the past.
Cal Kestis—one of the last surviving members of the Jedi Order after the purge of Order 66—is now a Padawan on the run. Experience this all-new single-player Star Wars story from Respawn Entertainment and EA Star Wars on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC this holiday season.
