Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios have released the first gameplay footage for Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons. The third-person single-player action-adventure places players in a dark fantasy open world inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, where magic functions as a flexible tool for both combat and exploration. The game is scheduled to launch in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Players take on the role of Kaatri, a veteran weapons master who forms a pact to wield otherworldly magic against rising dark forces. Award-winning actress Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Lucifer) performs the role of Kaatri. The gameplay reveal also introduces Tasha, Kaatri’s patron and source of power, voiced by Maggie Robertson. Tasha guides Kaatri in sensing and harnessing Raw Magic, a force scattered throughout the land of Darkon that expands and transforms her abilities.

The core design of Warlock centers on using magic creatively rather than as a simple set of combat spells. In exploration, every spell can function as a key that opens new paths or solutions within the environment. During combat, magic and melee combine into a fluid system that rewards observation and experimentation. Players can manipulate the environment, enemy positioning, and even weather conditions to create tactical openings before closing in with Kaatri’s weapons expertise.
The footage demonstrates spell chaining and environmental interaction that produce varied outcomes depending on how players approach each situation. The result is a systems-driven experience in which careful attention to the world can uncover unexpected routes and spectacular combinations in both traversal and fights.
Warlock is being developed by Invoke Studios, a Montreal-based Wizards of the Coast studio. The team includes talent that has worked on Far Cry, Watch Dogs, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Deus Ex. The game is set in the region of Darkon, described as a beautiful yet unsettling dark fantasy landscape filled with monsters, dungeons, and opportunities for magical experimentation.
The first dungeon and several creatures appear in the new gameplay, giving a clearer sense of the tone and scale of the open world. Rather than following a strictly linear path, the design encourages players to read the environment and use their growing magical toolkit to reshape encounters and exploration.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons represents Wizards of the Coast’s latest attempt to expand the Dungeons & Dragons universe into a full single-player action-adventure. By emphasizing systemic magic and player creativity, the game aims to deliver an experience that feels distinct from more traditional combat-focused titles while still rooted in the tabletop fantasy setting.
No exact release window within 2027 has been announced. Further details on story, additional characters, and the full scope of the open world are expected as development continues. For now, the first gameplay footage establishes the central fantasy: a seasoned fighter who gains the ability to bend magic and the environment itself to her will.
