Path Of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.5 Will Not Have Balance Changes For Fobidden Rites

Grinding Gear Games is shipping Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5 on September 4 with no character balance changes. The studio said that work is waiting for the December 11 1.0 launch.

Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5 still launches September 4 with Forbidden Rites, a fresh economy, campaign Rituals, Wildwood maps, and a Trial of Chaos rebuild. It will not move skill numbers, item power, or the current ladder of broken and dead builds.

That line came out of the August 27 GGG Live. Coverage of the stream said the studio skipped a balance pass because it did not have time to get one it was happy with. The plan now is to do that work in the 1.0 patch on December 11, the same day the game leaves early access and the Duelist shows up with swords.

We already covered what Forbidden Rites actually contains here. This piece is the part that patch preview buried: the event is content and systems. It is not a meta reset.
GGG has been loud about balance all year. Return of the Ancients in May hit leech, energy shield, poison, and a pile of overlap that had carried 0.4 characters. People rebuilt, then sat in Runes of Aldur for three months waiting for the next swing. A lot of them assumed the September patch would be that swing. It is not. Official notes are still due next week, closer to launch, and the stream already told you not to look for pages of gem and unique nerfs in that document.

What 0.5.5 does change is how you spend time. Ritual in every campaign zone. Sacred Blooms that open a Wildwood on a map. Trial of Chaos rooms you can leave and rejoin, stretched to 30 floors, with fragment farming that does not force a restart. One extra Arbiter kill to finish the Fortress. Abyssal Ravines on the Atlas. Runes of Aldur going core while the current league stays open. Those are real patches. They do not make a dead ascendancy feel better, and they do not pull a ridiculous mapper back to earth.

December 11 is also when the last campaign acts land and the client goes free-to-play. Balancing now, then balancing again when new acts, a new class, and a new player flood arrive, is two fights in three months. Holding the numbers until the game they actually want to ship is the cleaner version. It is also the version that leaves anyone stuck on a bad tree playing that tree until winter.

The risk is obvious. Event leagues live on a fresh economy. If the same three builds print the same currency they printed in August, Forbidden Rites becomes a cosmetics race and a Ritual tutorial. New players who register for 1.0 will watch streamers play those builds for three more months and copy them in December. GGG has to live with that risk.

The other risk sits with the people who wanted out. If your character is miserable in 0.5, September 4 gives you a new ladder and the same misery. You can reroll into a different bad setup. You cannot wait for a patch note that says your skill is allowed to exist again. That note is a 1.0 problem.

Personally, I think they are making the right call. I would rather they hold the pass than ship a half-finished one eight weeks before swords, new acts, and a free client change the population overnight. I would also rather they say which systems are on the 1.0 list before people spend a month playing and practicing a build that they enjoy for it to be nerfed right on release. Until that list exists, treat Forbidden Rites as a league start, not a balance patch. Roll something you can stand to play until winter, or stay in Runes of Aldur and finish the challenges you already started.

Are you resetting on September 4 anyway, or waiting for 1.0 to touch the game? Let us know in the comments.
