Wolcen Studio used the Future Games Show at Gamescom 2026 to announce Wolcen 2, the sequel to its 2020 isometric action RPG Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. The new game is planned for Steam Early Access in 2027, with a full release later intended for Windows PC and current-generation consoles. A first closed playtest is already available through the Wolcen Studio Playtest Program.

Set years after the original game, Wolcen 2 returns to a collapsing dark fantasy world shaped by reality-bending powers. Players can take on the campaign solo or with up to four-player co-op. As in the first game, there are no predefined classes. Weapon choice, skill customization, passives, and gear combine to form an archetype over time, whether that is a melee mage, spellblade, tank caster, gunslinger, or something entirely original.

Check out the new reveal trailer from Gamescom down below:

The campaign follows a world in turmoil after Anathea, the goddess holding the Rift between reality and the demonic Void shut, is mortally wounded. Forced out of exile, the Warlord, a bastard son of the Shadow God, and his companions become caught in a prophecy that promises salvation at a steep cost. Returning characters from Lords of Mayhem are part of the cast as the group confronts that fate or searches for a more brutal path to keep their freedom and save reality.

Combat is built around fast, rhythmic encounters against mixed packs of melee and ranged enemies, leading into large boss fights. Players can chain abilities, set up combinations, and enter Shadow Form when the fight turns against them. The studio is emphasizing mechanical synergies between skills, weapons, and items so that builds can change how combat actually feels rather than just adding numbers.

Wolcen 2 is being framed as a direct response to years of community feedback on Lords of Mayhem. One of the biggest structural changes is multiplayer. Sessions use peer-to-peer connections so players can host games directly instead of depending entirely on centralized servers. The studio says that as long as the campaign remains playable, groups should be able to experience it together.

"We have learned a great deal from our community over the years, including how it feels when access to something you care about is taken away," said Bogdan Oprescu, president of Wolcen Studio. "That experience shaped Wolcen 2 from the beginning. By allowing players to host multiplayer sessions directly, playing the campaign with friends will not depend entirely on infrastructure controlled by us."

After the campaign, Conquest pits factions against each other across dynamic battlefields. The Tower of Wonders lets players chase specific rewards while influencing the difficulty and outcome of each climb. Both modes are designed to support long-term item hunting, new builds, collection goals, and continued character growth.

Early Access in 2027 is intended to keep player feedback at the center of development. Additional story content and activities are planned after launch as the world, systems, and endgame expand over time. The game is available to wishlist on Steam now, and players who want in on the first closed playtest can register through the studio’s contributor site.

Wolcen 2 is the studio’s attempt to rebuild its original IP with a clearer focus on co-op reliability, classless buildcraft, and a darker story about what salvation costs. Whether that promise holds will depend on how the playtest and Early Access period actually feel, but the sequel now has a public target and a first chance for players to get their hands on it.
