Despite turning 10 years old recently, Bohemia Interactive's DayZ is more popular than ever. With the recent release of its latest expansion, DayZ Frostline, the open-world survival game is breaking player records across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
According to Bohemia Interactive, DayZ Frostline has sold over 300,000 copies during its first week of launch. What's more, the expansion has seemingly sparked a renewed interest in the 10-year-old game.
DayZ Frostline launched on October 15, 2024, simultaneously on all platforms. On October 20th, DayZ peaked at 501,522 total daily active users (235,618 on Steam, 113,897 on PlayStation, and 152,037 on Xbox). In addition to total daily active users, October 20th marked an all-time high number in terms of concurrent players, with 79,000 on Steam, 33,000 on PlayStation, and 36,000 on Xbox. That's pretty impressive stuff for a game that is over 10 years old.
“We're thrilled to celebrate the first week of DayZ Frostline's success, and we owe it all to our incredible community," said DayZ Brand Manager Scott Bowel. "A heartfelt thank you to every member, from veteran survivors to fresh spawns. Your unwavering dedication and insightful feedback have been the driving force behind DayZ's evolution, and the recent surge in player numbers is a testament to its enduring vitality. DayZ Remains a competing driving force of the survival genre, pushing boundaries in every aspect that is hard to replicate."
DayZ Frostline is the second expansion ever for DayZ. It introduces the game's third official map, Sakhal — a frozen volcanic archipelago filled with danger and adventure. "Sakhal is a frozen volcanic archipelago located in the far east," its description reads. "With its windy hill tops, snowy forests, messy settlements, vast ice fields, and a massive naval base, it will certainly test the limits of your survival skills."
Spanning over 80 km², survivors will explore a snow-covered wilderness, from dense forests to frozen lakes, where every step presents both beauty and danger. The expansion introduces new survival dynamics, requiring players to manage warmth and resources, while navigating innovative structures and landmarks. Additionally, new wildlife adapted to the harsh environment and drivable boats bring fresh gameplay opportunities to the world of DayZ.
DayZ Frostline is currently available on all of the same platforms that DayZ is on. The expansion costs $26.99, although it does also require that you own the DayZ base game which is priced separately for $49.99. In one of the first survival MMOs, players are dropped into a post-apocalyptic world overrun with an infected zombie population. Competing with other players for limited resources, tough decisions must be made — do you team up with strangers for strength in numbers or do you remain a lone wolf to avoid possible betrayal?
