Well, here's some news I think it's fair to say none of us saw coming! According to Deadline, Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope studio is partnering with entertainment and video game industry veterans to develop an RPG based on Apocalypse Now, the filmmaker's 1979 Vietnam War epic.
Interestingly, it's being financed through a Kickstarter campaign, and the rewards are pretty impressive as they range from early access to the game to a surfboard prop actually used in the movie itself!
American Zoetrope describes the game as a "psychological horror" that they hope will capture the tone, themes, and characters of the film. Don't expect to see this on shelves too soon, though, as it's currently being targeted for released in 2020. Rob Auten (Battlefield) is involved alongside other familiar names like Josh Sawyer (Fallout: New Vegas) and Montgomery Markland (Wasteland 2).
Coppola had this to say about what we should expect from the planned Apocalypse Now video game.
"Forty years ago, I set out to make a personal art picture that could hopefully influence generations of viewers for years to come. Today, I’m joined by new daredevils, a team who want to make an interactive version of Apocalypse Now, where you are Captain Benjamin Willard amidst the harsh backdrop of the Vietnam War. I’ve been watching video games grow into a meaningful way to tell stories, and I’m excited to explore the possibilities for Apocalypse Now for a new platform and a new generation."
